GEORGE NEWS - GO GEORGE has announced free bus travel over four consecutive weekends for passengers holding their own Smart Cards.

To celebrate this milestone when the system goes live, cardholders will also travel for free on the first three days after implementation of the Smart Card system: Thursday to Saturday, 15, 16 and 17 November.

This generous offer to the public has been announced as incentive to purchase their Smart Cards soon after they become available on 15 October.

On Saturday and Sunday 20 and 21, and 27 and 28 October, 3 and 4, and 10 and 11 November, passengers will be allowed to travel for free if they can produce their Smart Card.

"Apart from getting people to buy their Smart Cards as soon as possible and to avoid a bottleneck when we roll out, we also want to encourage passengers to use the accrued savings from the free travel days to load trips onto their Smart Cards so long, that can then be used from Sunday 18 November," says James Robb, GO GEORGE manager.

"As soon as Smart Cards become available, trips can be loaded at the same Smart Card kiosks and mobile vehicles that sell the cards. The top-up vendors will start selling trips on 1 November."

A leaflet with the list of Smart Card kiosks and the schedule of the mobile vehicles that will travel to different parts of town to sell cards and trips is now available from GO GEORGE communication champions on the buses and at bus stops.

It can also be picked up at the info kiosk at the Transport Hub, where the information officer is ready to answer questions about the new system, or it can be downloaded from the home page at www.gogeorge.org.za.

For more information, please phone the GO GEORGE Call Centre on 0800 044 044, send an e-mail to info@gogeroge.org.za, or follow GO GEORGE on Facebook for the latest news.

A festival for all visitors

There were 9 240 visitors at the George Strawberry Festival presented by Ola at the Redberry Farm last weekend.

GEORGE BUSINESS NEWS - If you were one of the over 9 240 visitors at the George Strawberry Festival presented by Ola at the Redberry Farm last weekend you will appreciate why the George Municipality's motto is 'George, the City for all reasons'.

The fun family festival had plenty in store for young and old, with children relishing the gigantic inflatable Henties kids play park. The Redberry Farm activities, Redberry express mini train, pony rides, pedal go-carts, bunny feeding, boats and bubble ball on the dam were packed from the moment the gates opened until parents had to call it quits for the day.

Kid-friendly shows included live performances by Lollos, a Henties puppet show, balloon twisting by the talented Derick Hill, face painting and the Ace Models Miss Strawberry pageant.

The older folks relaxed with fun in the sun strawberry experiences as they indulged in strawberry treats and cocktails at the Strawberry Emporium before going off into the Redberry strawberry fields. Families were entertained on our Coca-Cola Music Stage by local artists such as Kloudink, Mathew Rodriguez and Rhino & the Rasta.

They also enjoyed some family fun in the McDonald's Games Garden where they could do target shooting, play giant jenga and berry twister! There was an entertaining line-up for the Redberry Family Stage, which held the strawberry stomping competitions, strawberry eat-off competitions and the Mascot Parade!

François Ferreira fascinated us with his amazing kitchen skills as he demonstrated many scrumptious strawberry-licious dishes, from sweet to savoury! On Saturday morning from 09:00 till 12:00, Wayne Heart of Algoa FM broadcast live from the George Strawberry Festival presented by Ola.

Oaktree Transport presented their Redberry branded truck at the festival and allowed visitors to guess how many strawberries the truck can hold! We had a blast at the country life and good food family weekend. Thank you to all our visitors for making it so special and unforgettable! It was a weekend to remember!

We are so proud of our local entertainers and event partners who brought us a jam-packed weekend line-up.

Thank you to Ola, George Municipality, Group Editors, Algoa FM, SAB, Blitsdruk, Kaap Agri, Wesgro, Department of Agriculture and the Outeniqua Tourism Association and all our sponsors for helping us create a fun, wholesome outdoor family weekend.

- GEORGE NEWSGARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Garden Route SPCA is alarmed by the increasing number of pit bull terriers attacking people and wants the public to be educated about the nature of this controversial breed. "The public needs to be educated about this power breed," said senior SPCA inspector Salomé Bruyns.

"Most pit bulls in the townships are kept illegally chained or caged, which makes even a docile dog aggressive and territorial. Dogs are naturally territorial animals and when they are confined to a small space, this instinct is enhanced and they become neurotic, anxious and aggressive," she said. "For everyone's safety, we are forced to humanely euthanise any pit bull that wounds a person seriously."

The original American pit bull terrier was selectively bred to fight dogs but also to be compatible with people. Irresponsible breeding has led to some pit bulls being dangerous to humans. Selective breeding involves choosing some natural attributes of the animals; innate behaviours that give the animal satisfaction and pleasure through the release of 'feel-good' hormones and endorphins, which trigger euphoric feelings.

- GEORGE NEWSGEORGE NEWS - About 40 people from the taxi industry were arrested yesterday afternoon in the George CBD when the standoff between the traffic and police officers and the local taxi industry got out of hand.

The standoff started on Monday when the taxis went on strike in protest of impoundments and the non-issuing of taxi permits. Following long negotiations on Tuesday and Wednesday it seemed that all would be back to normal on Thursday, as it was agreed by all the role players that a committee would be established within seven days to plan the way forward.

Traffic swoop on Thursday
But at sunrise on Thursday, the provincial traffic ghost squad swooped again and impounded another 6 taxis. This angered the owners and drivers and more than 100 taxis gathered at the GO GEORGE bus depot in York Street where the impounded taxis were parked.

The taxis blocked the road and the area was cordoned off from the circle at Hope Street right through to Fichat Street in the CBD.

A Pops official told the paper that taxi drivers were informed that impounding fees must be paid before taxis would be released.

ANC MPL Cameron Dugmore also tried his luck at mediation.

He added that unlawful actions wouldn't be tolerated. After about 8 hours of deadlock in negotiations to get the taxis released, the taxis were forced by the riot police to leave the depot and they headed up York Street under police escort. In the CBD the police used stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse protesters who they deemed to be threatening. Most of the taxis then parked at the taxi rank in the CBD - not taking on passengers, but also not heading home. At the time of going to press at 17:00 the taxi industry was convening a press conference at the taxi rank.

- GEORGE NEWSGEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - Traffic is flowing freely into and out of Thembalethu after earlier reports that only vehicles leaving the area would be allowed to cross the bridge – the only access and exit to Thembalethu.

This morning thousands of George commuters had to make their way to work on foot as the GO GEORGE bus service has also been suspended pending further notice. GO GEORGE drivers are fearing for their safety and a repeat of the 2015 arson attacks that led to damage running into the millions.

George Herald Journalist Zolani Sinxo reports from the scene that police and traffic officials are maintaining a high profile presence from the traffic light in Lawaaikamp right through to the Four Ways intersection in Thembalethu. The Public Order Police (Pops) are also on the scene.

The striking taxi drivers and their vehicles are gathered at the Thembalethu taxi rank and at Thembalethu Square as they refuse to render any further service until their many gripes have been addressed. The trouble started yesterday morning when the so-called provincial traffic ghost squad started clamping down on taxis and motorists in general.

The local taxi industry is incensed about the delay or refusal in issuing taxi permits, and say they are being targeted by authorities. They demand that all impounded taxis be immediately released.

Comment from GO GEORGE, George Municipality and the provincial department of transport is being awaited.
